We really enjoyed our independent bike ride across Switzerland in July 2017. Although it rained virtually the entire first day when we departed Geneva, the weather for the remainder of our cycling was superb and perfect for riding.
Bike Switzerland has done a great job designing the route which was pretty flat with only a few modest inclines thrown in to keep our heart rates ticking over. Importantly, the majority of the trip was on well defined bike paths and with the help of “sat-nav”, it was impossible to get lost. The daily stage distances were pretty comfortable and for those who wish to take a leisurely route, a train option is sometimes available. Scenery was beautiful and always changing from lakes to vineyards then intense agriculture, cropping and dairy. An endless variety.
The accommodation was excellent and well located and included traditional hotels, an old hospital and a working monastery!
During the day we planned our rides so we could stop and enjoy coffee and lunch at suitable rest points while always planning to arrive mid afternoon which then gave us the opportunity to explore some of the fascinating towns where we stayed such as walled cities like Solothurn and Murten. Evening walks and restaurant hunting was always fun.
Our bikes were functional and easy to ride and Bike Switzerland organized for couriers to collect and deliver our luggage which removed this hassle.
Our final night in Romanshorn allowed us to celebrate our achievement of crossing the entire country and having such a terrific experience. We would happily recommend this trip to other travellers.
