Challenge Route Day 7: Lucerne -> Rapperswil

Today you will pass four lakes and go through four cantons. The ride begins on hard dirty paths along the River Reuss. You are then in Zug, Switzerland’s smallest (but richest) canton. Picnic on the shores of the old town before climbing out and into the high marshlands of Rothenthurm. You will bike past peat-covered cabins and through rolling fields before reaching the Einsiedeln monastery.

From Einsiedeln, you have some climbing to do, but the payoff are spectacular views of Lake Zurich below. As always, well-maintained bike paths allow you to go where few tourists venture.

Coast downhill into Rapperswil and settle into your hotel in the town’s center. Lots of choices here: take a lakeside promenade, visit the church and monastery perched over the city, stroll through the reputed rose gardens, enjoy a circus museum, zoo, wine bars or nap.
